I would say one of the biggest technology developments that influenced US culture is the Television, it allowed for the spread of news and politics.

First, the development of the polio vaccine by Jonas Salk ended an epidemic that killed millions and crippled even more. Even though television technology had been around before the 1950's, the 1950's saw its spread to more households. This led to the creation of more television networks.
